Born in Greensboro, North Carolina, Montross’s towering presence (7 feet tall) was evident from a young age. He honed his skills on the courts of Westchester Country Day School, leading the Wildcats to a state championship title before heading to Chapel Hill in 1990.
Under the legendary Dean Smith, Montross blossomed into a dominant center. His trademark skyhook and fierce rebounding helped propel the Tar Heels to the 1993 NCAA Championship, etching his name in Carolina basketball history.

Following his collegiate success, Montross embarked on a nine-year NBA career, playing for the Boston Celtics, New York Knicks, Detroit Pistons, and Philadelphia 76ers. Though injuries hampered his later seasons, his contributions on and off the court were widely respected.
After retiring from professional basketball, Montross returned to Chapel Hill, joining the Carolina radio broadcast team in 2006. His insightful commentary and infectious enthusiasm became familiar to Tar Heel fans across the nation.
